There will be one dog that stands out above all others in a dog handler’s career.
No matter how hard he tries, that animal cannot be replaced. All dogs have their own character but that one dog remains unique.
I became able to read Bess like a book, to recognise her every sign, to understand her body language. She in turn came to identify my moods, to be confident of my trust, and to know what was required of her.
The greatest compliment ever paid to me, however unwittingly, came from a Metropolitan Police Dog Section Inspector who was judging a police dog competition at R.A.F. Tangmere in Sussex. The weather was appalling with high winds and driving rain but Bess had worked her heart out for me. As I returned to where the judge was standing, he said, “You and that bitch are a team.”
I could ask nothing more of Bess, who always tried her hardest for me. Naturally, we were not successful on every occasion, but each time I knew that we could not have done more. While a lot of our duties were necessarily mundane, many examples of her work were outstanding.
We were involved in many very serious incidents such as murders and assaults but Bess was a dog that I could have fun with, a dog that I could trust. Like when she was sent to find two 'streakers' who stupidly tried to run away from us. Whoops!

You will love this book. It is written from the perspective of the dog and with some notes added throughout by the officer. My heart went out to the both of them as they learn to work together and meet various circumstances and scenarios....all very interesting and exciting. Their home life is also written about and is heartwarming. I needed kleenex more than once but I love dogs and my late Father had been a policeman so this book was so great for me. It did not take long to read and I will remember it always. As an aside....for us who are not British it was fun to learn more about life and policework across the ocean!Product details
